If you’ve lived in the Midwest for a while, then there is no doubt that you are familiar with the fickle weather we have around here.
With as much snow as we’ve gotten this last week, almost all of it is gone. And though that may seem like a sign of relief for most homeowners, there are quite a few things to consider in regards to the damage the melting snow can have on your home –especially to your windows and doors.
So, here are a few tips we’d like to share with you on how to avoid damage to your doors and windows. Take a look below:
- Avoid piling up snow near your home. One of the biggest culprits of damage and rot to your garage door and entry doors is when the snow you’ve piled up near them begins to melt. Avoid this by thoroughly shoveling your driveway or entryway, and by piling up the snow somewhere where it can drain easily into the street. If your driveway happens to slant in towards your garage and you notice a pool near or around the door, try to do your best to mop it up and keep it as dry as possible.
- Don’t ignore the side doors or less frequented areas. Sometimes, we tend to forget about light trafficked areas of our home during the winter, such as the side entry doors or patio area. But snowdrifts that hit these parts of our home can do a lot of damage, not only to our doors and windows, but to the siding as well. Try your best to at least clear some of that snow away, so you don’t run into trouble once it begins to melt.
- Brush off your windows. Snow built up around the ledge of your windows can end up causing you a lot of trouble if it’s not taken care of right away. If possible, try your best to brush them off to prevent water damage once the snow begins to melt. It is also good practice to make sure you check all of your basement windows, since those tend to be neglected once they are covered in snow.
